which countries' income gap is about decrease? new evidences from panel unit root tests with multiple endogenous structural breaks

چکیده
in this paper, we analyze the dynamics of income gap between 138 countries with usa by using time series model of convergence hypothesis and various panel unit root tests over period 1950-2008. all panel unit root tests don’t reject the null hypothesis of unit root. univariate unit root tests results show that gdp per capita of south korea, switzerland, austria, lesoto and hungry catch up with usa and gdp per capita of syria, new zealand, and jordan diverged from usa gdp per capita. the estimation shows that the breaks were clustered around specific dates, such as oil shocks or financial crises. also, the results show that almost poor countries stay poor and almost rich countries stay rich yet. only some countries same as south korea, hong kong, singapore, taiwan, india, and china could escape lag deadlock and the countries e.g. syria, madagascar, kenya, and comoro moved into poverty trap. the distributions of gdp per capita in various years confirmed our results. jel classification: o1; o47; c32; c33

Which OIC countries are catching up? Time Series Evidences with Multiple Structural Breaks
Abstract In this paper, income per capita convergence hypothesis is tested in selected OIC countries. For this purpose, we use the time series model and univariate KPSS stationary test with multiple structural breaks (Carrion-i-Silvestre et al. (2005)) over the period 1950-2008. The results show that most OIC countries could not catch up toward USA. Although because of some positive term of tra...
متن کاملStationarity of health expenditures and GDP: evidence from panel unit root tests with heterogeneous structural breaks.
This paper re-examines the stationarity of national health care expenditures and GDP in a panel setting utilizing data from 20 OECD countries over the period from 1960 to 1997. Previous research in this area has recognized the drawback of not allowing for structural breaks in their unit root tests and noted that their empirical results may not be robust. We advance the literature by utilizing a...
متن کاملSeasonal Unit Root Tests Under Structural Breaks
In this paper, several seasonal unit root tests are analysed in the context of structural breaks at known time and a new break corrected test is suggested. We show that the widely used HEGY test as well as an LM variant thereof are asymptotically robust to seasonal mean shifts of finite magnitude. In finite samples, however, experiments reveal that such tests suffer from severe size distortions...

Unit Root Tests and Structural Breaks: A Survey with Applications
The theme of unit roots in macroeconomic time series have received a great amount of attention in terms of theoretical and applied research over the last three decades. Since the seminal work by Nelson and Plosser (1982), testing for the presence of a unit root in the time series data has become a topic of great concern. This issue gained further momentum with Perron’s 1989 paper which emphasiz...
